Eczema

Introduction

Eczema is a skin condition in which dryness and itchiness are caused by allergies. It is a type of dermatitis that leads to skin inflammation. In Hong Kong, around 30% of Hong Kong children have eczema, even though the prevalence of suffering from eczema increases in both Asian and Western countries. Different locations of eczema can be led by different causes. The skin from the neck, inner surfaces of elbow or knee joints is often found where eczema develops. It may affect the quality of life or mental health condition.

    • when L. reuteri Protectis was given to expecting mothers from pregnancy week 36 until delivery, and to the infant up to 12 months of age, the number of children with IgE-associated eczema at two years of age was significantly lower in the probiotic group compared to placebo.
    • Treated infants had less IgE-associated eczema at 2 years of age, especially those with allergic mothers. The lower incidence of allergic sensitisation in the L. reuteri group implies that these children possibly run a reduced risk of respiratory allergy later in life, and a follow-up study to investigate such an effect is in progress.
    • At 2 years of age the L. reuteri supplemented infants had less IgE-associated eczema (i.e. eczema with hyperreactivity to allergy-causing substances such as egg and milk), 8% vs. 20% (P=0.02). Skin prick test (SPT) reactivity was also less common in the L. reuteri group compared to the placebo group, significantly so for infants with mothers with allergies, 14% vs. 31% (P=0.02).
